The purpose of music videos

The purpose of DVD’s is to help promote and to entertain people. By using DVD’s people can make sales and earn money. The outcomes of DVD’s are that people can make money off them just by selling it to the general public. Also DVD’s can also help promote people and increase the popularity.
For example, a well known band or artist might use DVD's to help sell their music if it had been recorded with live footage. something like this would help make the artists profit and woul also help the popularity of that artist.

The purpose of Itunes is to help artists sell their music so that they can make profit on their music. Itunes also helps to see who is the biggest artist just by comparing on how many people have downloaded their music. The purpose of Itunes also is to help customers download music legally rather than encouraging people to download illegally.  The outcomes on Itunes is that artists can make a profit just by selling their music. And it can also help people get promoted to bigger record labels. live events can also be sold on itunes if a certain artist has a live recording.
To sum up Itunes would be that Itunes is a  media player computer program, used for playing, downloading, and organizing digital music and video files on desktop or laptop computers. It can also manage contents on iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Itunes 1.0 was released 11 years ago on the 9th january 2001

The purpose of Facebook is let your friends see what you do and it also helps promote people. People on Facebook can share music to their friends so that they can help promote other people. The outcomes of Facebook is that it is easy to self promote yourself to friends and also help promote other people.

when people share music on facebook this ables their friends to look at what they was listening to. when people share music like this, it is promoting artists that was shared to the persons friends. Facebook is a social network where people can contact friends and also share photos, music and videos which was launched in february 2004 and was originally called facemash.

The purpose of Myspace is just like Facebook you can share music and videos with your friends and also help promote yourself and other people. The outcomes of Myspace is that it is easy to self promote yourself to friends and also help promote other people.

Myspace is very similar to facebook because on Myspace you can also share photos, music and videos. Myspace was founded in 2003 and was acquired by news corporation in july 2005 for $580 million. Myspace is also owned by Specific media LLC and Justin Timberlake and was sold to them for $35 million.

Record Labels

Major record labels such as Island sign artistes they think will have mass appeal and therefore make lots of money. They will look to use music videos as part of a wider marketing strategy that includes things such as radio play, press reviews, TV appearances and an expensive website. Island Records was founded in Jamaica in 1959 by Chris Blackwell and Graeme Goodall, and partially financed by Stanley Borden from RKO, taking its name from the 1955 Alec Waugh novel, subsequent film and Harry Belafonte hit song "Island in the Sun". The company was then relocated to the UK in may 1962.

This is a video by Taio cruz which you can access on You Tube.

Smaller independent record labels such as Spinnin' Records have much smaller budgets and the artists they sign generally have a more niche appeal. This means that the marketing strategy is different as they can’t rely on radio and TV for promotions. Music videos are used although they will be much lower budget and accessed mainly through the internet. Spinnin' Records also hosts over 12 sub labels such as Sander van Doorn's Doorn's Records and Afrojack's Wall Recordings.

This is a video by Ian carey which you can access on You Tube.

Artists who self produce and are not signed to a record label tend not to have much of a budget for music videos. Their videos tend to be homemade and posted online receiving very few hits.

The purpose of music videos

The purpose of music channels and videos are to promote artists and record labels to the world and also to entertain people that are watching the channel. The outcomes to this is that the artist and record label will increase their popularity throughout the world. It will also help people to recognise new artists. Also for the artists is will help make them money.

Many young people use You Tube as a source to view music videos. Today, You Tube can be use for self promotion for many young artist in the world with record labels constantly on the look out for new talent.  promote young artists that have not been discovered yet and to also help record labels to find young people in the music industry to sign up.
You Tube is also use for entertain, for example, many people use you tube as a source of music because it is free and its all can access. However, if people use other peoples material on you tube, the copyright law can help stop people copying and help protect using peoples material and claiming it as their own. Many artist use you tube so it helps them promote their own material. You tube also helps artists get noticed in the music with record labels search for young artists on you tube. People can also make money on you tube if they are a Google partner. For example, for every 1000 views on a video you could earn money.

In music videos there are 3 types of music videos. narrative, performance and conceptual. narrative means that the music video follows a storyline. performance means that you see the artist either performing on stage or on set for example, Adele used one of her performances at a music award ceremony as her music video. Conceptual videos are music videos that have a meaning embedded in the video which would make viewers think the video is pointless at first but still has a meaning.

Synergy in Media

Synergy comes from a Greek word that means work together. In Media it is used to explain how different products can work together using the same concepts, for example, film soundtrack and video game.
In the film Terminator 2, a Guns and Roses song, “You Could Be Mine” was used in the soundtrack. The result was that the song promoted the film and vice versa.

The History of MTV

MTV, also known as Music  television launched in august 1st in 1981 at 12:01am. The purpose of the channel when it first started was to view music video's to the public present by on air hosts also known as VJs, through out the years VJs was begining to popularize and more people became addicted to MTV.

MTV's moral influence on young people, including issues related to censorship and social activism, has been a subject of intense debate for years. MTV's choice to focus on non-music programming has also been contested relentlessly since the 1990s, demonstrating the channel's previous impact on popular culture.

On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m., MTV launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," spoken by John Lack, and played over footage of the first Space Shuttle launch countdown of Columbia, which took place earlier that year and of the launch of Apollo 11. Those words were immediately followed by the original MTV theme song, a crunching classical tune composed by Jonathan Elias and John Petersen, playing over photos of the Apollo 11 moon landing, with the flag featuring MTV's logo changing various colors, textures, and designs.

The purpose of MTV is to promote artists and record labels to the world and also to entertain people that are watching the channel. The outcomes to this is that the artist and record label will increase their popularity throughout the world. It will also help people to recognise new artists. Also for the artists is will help make them money.

The purpose of Music Videos

Introduction:

This blog is going to be about Music videos and I will be talking about what type of music videos there are and how certain stuff can help promote music videos. I will also be talking about the purpose of certain applications like Facebook and Itunes can help promote and sell music. I will also be defining what synergy is and talking about major and independant recording labels and self promoting artists.

The history of music videos:

The first music video ever to come to the television screens was by Queen - Boheimien Rhapsody which was released in 1975 for their album 'A night at the Opera'. This was the first music video that anyone did and was produced by Roy Thomas Baker and stayed at the top of the UK charts for nine weeks and selling over a million copies by the end of january 1976.  it was only after the success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that it became regular practice for record companies to produce promotional videos for artists' single releases.
